Everyday Uses of Language

A one-page reference for every communication function your AAC student deserves access to, not just requesting.

Here's the thing about requesting: it works. "I want" is so reliable that kids learn it fast, adults model it constantly, and everyone gets comfortable. But communication is so much bigger than getting your needs met.

What if the kid who only requests isn't limited, but just hasn't been shown the other doors yet? Telling a joke. Protesting. Sharing a story. Complaining (yes, complaining counts). Commenting on something just because it's interesting.

This handout lays all of those functions out in one place, so you and the communication partners you support can keep them visible and start modeling the full range.

What's on it:

  1. Everyday communication functions, from requesting to self-advocacy

  2. A quick-reference layout you can post by the device or tape inside a therapy binder

  3. A simple way to spot which functions a student already uses, and which ones to model next

Print it, share it with parents and paraprofessionals, and use it as a reminder that there's a whole world of language past "want cookie."
